How to Transfer Citi Points to Emirates Skywards (2026 Guide)

Emirates isn't in Star Alliance, Oneworld, or SkyTeam — it never has been. What it has instead is a sprawling, mostly self-operated network of 140+ destinations through its Dubai hub, plus a growing list of bilateral partnerships (Qantas, JetBlue, Alaska, flydubai, and others) that extend Skywards miles beyond Emirates' own metal. For a US points collector, the appeal isn't network breadth so much as the hardware: Emirates' A380 First Class Suite is a fully enclosed private cabin with sliding doors, faux windows for passengers seated away from the fuselage, and an onboard shower spa, and the airline's business class is consistently ranked among the best in the sky.

Citi ThankYou Rewards is one of a shrinking number of transferable-points currencies with a direct Emirates link at all — Chase Ultimate Rewards used to be a Skywards partner too, but Chase dropped Emirates entirely in October 2025 rather than accept a reduced ratio, leaving Citi, Amex, Capital One, and Bilt as the remaining options. Among those, Citi's post-cut 1:0.8 ratio lands even with Amex Membership Rewards' 5:4 (also 0.8, effective September 2025) and comes out ahead of Capital One's 4:3 (0.75, effective January 2026); Bilt is the lone holdout still transferring at a full 1:1. None of Citi, Amex, or Capital One offer the 1:1 deal Citi used to provide, but Citi remains a workable option, not a dead one.

Effective July 27, 2025, Citi cut the ThankYou-to-Emirates Skywards transfer ratio from 1:1 to 1:0.8 — a 20% reduction that means you now need 25% more ThankYou points to land the same number of Skywards miles. Citi gave cardholders advance notice by email but, as is typical for these devaluations, offered no real public explanation for the change. The cut applies to the cards that carry full transfer privileges: Citi Strata Elite, Citi Strata Premier, and the legacy Citi Prestige (closed to new applicants but still transfer-eligible for existing holders).

There's a second, easy-to-miss wrinkle: no-annual-fee ThankYou cards — Double Cash, the no-fee Strata card (formerly Rewards+), ThankYou Preferred, and the AT&T-branded cards — don't have direct transfer access to airline partners like Emirates at all. To reach Emirates, those points first need to be combined into a Strata Elite, Strata Premier, or Prestige account, which is where the 1:0.8 ratio applies. (Citi did cut transfer ratios on select no-fee-card partners in that same July 2025 update, but only for JetBlue TrueBlue, Choice Privileges, and Wyndham Rewards — Emirates wasn't one of them.) A redemption that used to cost 100,000 Citi points now effectively costs 125,000 points at the standard 1:0.8 rate.

Skywards doesn't publish a single fixed award chart. Emirates-operated flights price through an online Miles Calculator with Saver and (pricier, more flexible) Flex tiers, and pricing moves with distance and demand rather than sitting in static zones. Emirates also runs a separate distance-based chart for a roster of partner airlines — Malaysia Airlines, Korean Air, TAP Air Portugal, GOL, and others — that was overhauled in March 2026 and, for many short-haul partner segments, actually got cheaper.

Emirates' own-metal pricing moved the other direction: a May 20, 2026 devaluation raised award costs roughly 15% across most routes and cabins, with First Class increases running into the tens of thousands of miles on some legs — JFK-Dubai First, for example, went from 163,500 to 188,000 miles one-way. One genuine improvement from that same update — Emirates now sells one-way Saver-level business class awards, where previously true Saver pricing was largely locked to round-trip bookings, forcing one-way travelers into the costlier Flex Plus tier.

Since May 12, 2025, Emirates has restricted First Class Classic Reward bookings on its own metal to Skywards members holding Silver, Gold, or Platinum elite status — a real obstacle for a Citi cardholder without existing Emirates status, since points transferred from Citi land in your personal Skywards account and inherit whatever status you already have. Business class awards carry no such restriction, which makes business the more realistic target for most Citi transfers even though First Class gets the attention.

Emirates passes carrier-imposed fuel surcharges straight through to award tickets — often $400+ per person one-way on US-Europe routes and $800+ one-way on US-Dubai routes — so budget for that on top of the miles.
